Vulvar Cancer

Understanding Vulvar Cancer

Vulvar cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the external female genital area, known as the vulva. Changes in the skin, persistent itching, sores or unusual lumps should be evaluated by a qualified medical professional.

At Divine Care, women experiencing persistent vulvar symptoms can receive appropriate clinical evaluation and guidance regarding further investigation and management.

Possible Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Persistent itching or irritation in the vulvar area
  • A lump, swelling or thickened area
  • A sore or ulcer that does not heal
  • Changes in skin colour or texture
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • Pain, burning or tenderness

Many non-cancerous conditions can also cause similar symptoms. However, persistent changes should not be ignored.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

Evaluation generally begins with a detailed history and physical examination of the affected area.

  • Clinical examination
  • Assessment of visible skin changes or lesions
  • Biopsy when clinically indicated
  • Additional imaging or investigations when required
  • Referral for specialist oncology evaluation where appropriate

Management and Treatment

Treatment depends on the location and extent of the disease as well as the patient's overall health.

Management may include surgery and, in selected cases, radiation therapy, chemotherapy or other specialist treatments. A multidisciplinary approach may be required for comprehensive cancer care.

When to Seek Medical Advice

Consult a doctor if you notice a persistent lump, sore, skin change, unexplained bleeding, ongoing itching or discomfort in the vulvar area.
